Looking for horror movie recommendations to watch in December 2020 and don’t know where to begin as you browse through Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime? If you don’t want to rent anything or head to the movies (ha!), here are some free options you can check out or absolutely avoid at all costs. My honest review.

I’ve seen a million movies available right now on all three of these channels, but I will only reference movies I’ve actually watched during this month – December 2020. Check back often for updates because I plan on updating as I go.
And before you ask, yes – I consume this much horror on a regular basis. I work from home and always have a horror movie / series playing while I work.
They won’t always be a positive review. I will tell you to avoid movies when I think they aren’t worth your time. Apologize to the directors and producers who put their hearts and souls into those programs. However, this is a personal project chronicling what I’ve watched and I have to keep my thoughts pure. Amazon Prime
#FollowMe – Watch
Synopsis: A YouTube celebrity and her two friends go missing after posting their whereabouts on social media.
My Take: At first, I literally couldn’t handle how bubbly and wild and crazy the main characters were. They were a bit over the top for my personal take. But I have to confess… I couldn’t stop watching the movie.
The Monster Project – Watch
Synopsis: Aspiring filmmakers find three cast members who claim to be real monsters. Filming in an abandoned mansion, the production soon becomes a nightmare as they reveal their true forms: a skinwalker, a demon and a vampire.
My Take: At first, I was put off by the stereotypical African American character that was going heavy on the street vibe. I was struggling with, “Am I being too PC or is this some serious bullshit?” for about 20 minutes of the film. But once they got through the intro, he really calms down and the film totally picks up. I enjoyed 80% of this movie up until the very last second.
Queen Of Spades – Watch
Synopsis: The ghost of the Queen of Spades wants to quench her thirst with the blood of boarding students.
My Take: I liked this concept so much that I actually did a bit of research about the Queen of Spades and how to summon her.
Hell House LLC – SKIP
Synopsis: Five years after an unexplained malfunction causes the death of 15 tour-goers and staff on the opening night of a Halloween haunted house tour, a documentary crew travels back to the scene of the tragedy to find out what really happened.
My Take: It was so slow that I had to shut it off 20 minutes in. Couldn’t capture me.
Gehenna – Skin
Synopsis: A company’s representatives visit Saipan to search for locations for their company’s newest resort. As they find what they think is the perfect spot, they discover a hidden bunker and decide to explore it. They soon find out that curiosity can kill.
My take: It had potential but didn’t deliver.
Grave ENcounters 2 – Watch
Synopsis – A film student who is obsessed with the movie Grave Encounters sets out with his friends to visit the psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film.
My take: I liked this one so much that I am going to look up the first movie and watch it.
Soul To Keep – Skip
Synopsis: Beelzebub, a powerful demon hell-bent on possessing and consuming souls, goes after two siblings and their lifelong friends at a rundown country house.
My Take: Not worth the time. Subpar acting. The only unique angle I did enjoy from this film is one of the main leads was deaf and a majority of the film was signed.
47 Hours To Live – Watch
Synopsis: Two socially awkward teen girls unwittingly unleash a death curse upon themselves while playing an iPhone game.
My Take: Liked this one. It felt like a combination of a few different movies I’ve seen already but it still kept my attention. Trigger warning – discussion of rape.
House of Bones – Watch
Synopsis: Psychic Heather Burton (Charisma Carpenter, Angel) and a team of TV ghost hunters travel to investigate a haunted house surrounded by rumors of paranormal activity. Upon their arrival, they find a foreboding house with a mind of its own, and as darkness falls, the house begins to kill the crew one by one. With time running out, will they be able to outwit this terror and make it out alive?
My Take: Charisma Carpenter was literally the worst thing out of this entire movie. Just endless walking through every room without a line and her cleavage hanging out of her shirt. But if you looked beyond that placement, it gets weird. So, watch it.
The Whispering Man – Skip
Synopsis: After inheriting an ominous painting, a family soon becomes disturbed by a demonic presence known as The Whispering Man.
My Take: No. Did not enjoy this. Slow and boring. The ending got a little psychotic, but it wasn’t worth the ride.
The Possession of Michael King – Watch
Synopsis: Michael King (Shane Johnson), who doesn’t believe in God or the Devil. Following the sudden death of his wife, Michael decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural, making himself the center of the experiment – allowing demonologists, necromancers, and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him – in the hopes that when they fail, he’ll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth.
My Take: I was into the entire concept. A non-believer getting what he… deserved. Is that awful to say? It was also first-person filmed which was so very Blair Witch. I don’t mind that. Sometimes you want to keep things basic.
Afflicted – Watch
Synopsis: Two best friends see their trip of a lifetime take a dark turn when one of them is struck by a mysterious affliction. Now, in a foreign land, they race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely.
My take: Another personal road trip documented. This is a GREAT take on what it would be like to turn on your own without any prior knowledge. In real life – dealing with cops and property damage. It was a great ride. I’m surprised this one didn’t get more attention.
Inner Demon – Skip
Synopsis – A teenage girl is abducted by a serial killer couple and manages to escape and find refuge in an isolated farmhouse, only to discover it is home to greater horrors and a malevolent spirit.
My take – I got about halfway through and turned it off. Meh. Just about got to the spirit. Some mist came out of the wall and then I fell asleep.
Netflix
Don’t Listen – Watch
Synopsis: After the strange death of his young son at their new home, Daniel hears a ghostly plea for help, spurring him to seek out a renowned paranormal expert.
My Take: Surprisingly good. Continue to watch – even after the credits roll. It has a slow boil and then the ending just really puts the whole thing together. One of my favorites so far for December.
The Call – Watch
Synopsis: Connected by phone in the same home but 20 years apart, a serial killer puts another woman’s past — and life — on the line to change her own fate.
My Take: Absolutely watch this. Really smart spin on The Butterfly Effect with a horror vibe. Top three for December.
Castlevania – Watch
Synopsis: When his wife is burned at the stake after being falsely accused of witchcraft, the vampire Count Dracula declares all the people of Wallachia will pay with their lives. He summons an army of demons which overruns the country, causing the people to live lives of fear and distrust.
My take: I never watched American Anime before and, well, I freaking loved it. DO NOT watch with kids.
Ratchet – Watch
Synopsis: You deserve someone to show you mercy. From the creator of American Horror Story, witness the origin of one of the world’s most iconic characters, Nurse Ratched.
My Take: I consumed this in two days. I adore Sarah and will watch anything she is in. I can’t wait for season two.
Hulu
30 Days of Night – Watch
Synopsis: After an Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for a month, it is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires.
My Take: This is one of my favorite vampire movies of all time and it is included on Hulu this month. Watch it.
She Dies TOmorrow – Skip
Synopsis: A woman’s conviction that she will die tomorrow spreads like a contagion through a town.
My Take: I tried. I tried to get through this movie. But it took slow boil to a whole other level. I just couldn’t get through it.
Black Narcissus (Series) – Watch
Synopsis: Black Narcissus is an FX limited series based on the best-selling novel by Rumer Godden. Mopu, Himalayas, 1934. A remote clifftop palace once known as the ‘House of Women’ holds many dark secrets. When the young nuns of St. Faith attempt to establish a mission there, its haunting mysteries awaken forbidden desires that seem destined to repeat a terrible tragedy.
My Take: I don’t know if I would consider this a HORROR series, because nothing was really scary. It’s more of a love story than anything else. The last thirty seconds of the entire series had me in tears. That made it all worth it. I don’t know. It isn’t scary, but it had a DIFFERENT storyline – one I hadn’t seen before and I am always looking for that. As you can see, I watch a lot of TV during the day while I work.
Remember, check back often for updates throughout the month.
